Forbach - Saint-Avold area

An first-hand experience of the mining universe that kept this entire region alive last century, in Pays de Forbach - Saint-Avold, in Moselle.

Life in Moselle no longer revolves around the mines there but the adventure that coal once fuelled is still very much alive, and grown-ups and children can enjoy it in Musée du Carreau Wendel. This amazing journey to the stirring land of Lorrain's gueules noires ("black mugs") includes a true-to-life experience of the noise, heat and relentless hazards in France's largest mining site.

Völklinger Hütte, is another industrial tourism highlight. This steel mill is UNESCO world heritage and warrants a short trip across the border into neighbouring Germany.
